Teen Outreach
Hospice Teen Outreach (HTO) is a student service organization of Hospice House and Support Care of Williamsburg. Their mission is to promote volunteering and learning opportunities in a variety of areas within Hospice House for area teens.
HTO members work individually and in groups, providing companionship and support to hospice families, mentoring and friendship to children of hospice families. They also support Hospice House directly by working inside the office, cleaning, cooking or helping outside in the gardens.
Each year the HTO selects group projects for which they will take responsibility. In the 2008/09 school year, HTO made individual care baskets for hospice families and received training in direct hospice patient volunteering. In 2009/10, the student leadership added the Video Memories Project. Working with the Chaplain, teams of students visit senior citizens. They interview and record the as they tell the story of their life. Students include a collage of memorabilia, photographs and personally selected music into a DVD and give this as a gift to families.
The experience has already become a wonderful mingling of two generations and a great learning experience. Two students are producing a documentary about the group and their experiences for a Senior Year project.
HTO has received primary support from the Roy R. Charles Charitable Trust, the HCR Manor Care Foundation, the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg and the Junior Womans Club of Williamsburg and many generous individuals and businesses in the area.
